There are cycle routes across Miami for experienced and inexperienced cyclists alike.
The cycle trails of Miami are split into individual stretches that cyclists can use for a leisurely afternoon in the sun. The Rickenback Trail of Key Biscayne takes riders past Virginia Key, Miami Seaquarium and Bill Baggs State Park. The Commodore Trail of Coconut Grove is ideal for those geekier riders that are keen to stop off at the Museum of Science/Planetarium and Vizcaya Museum. The Old Culter Trail continues through Coral Gables with views of Biscayne Bay and the delights of Fairchild Tropical Garden and Pinecrest Gardens. The short 2.7 mile Biscayne Trail heads across the Palmetto Bay area. Each trail is accessible to solo riders and groups, on different types of bike (read useful article here), and are free to use.
The great thing about those four trails mentioned above is that not only are they part of a much wider network, they actually join up. This means that serious cyclists can attempt to ride the whole thing for the best possible cycling tour of the area. Another Miami cycling challenge for the bold (and well-prepared) is the Biscayne-Everglades Greenway Trail. This trail links the Everglades and Biscayne National Park with 45 miles of mountain bike-friendly roads. Those willing to pay a small entry fee for another scenic route will also enjoy the mountain bike trails of Oleta River State Park in the north of the city.
Where can riders hire their bikes for this Miami biking adventure?
There are a few different bike shops with rentals around the Biscayne Bay area. Miami Beach Bicycle Center (+1 305-674-0150) is a full service operation for sales, rentals and repairs. Further north in Miami Beach is Bike and Roll Miami (+1 305-604-0001), who also have an outlet in Downtown Miami. On the other side of the bay, cyclists will find The Miami Bicycle and Pro Shop (+1 305-358-7004). There are also CitiBike and Bike Hint stations dotted around. This accessibility and choice means that any cyclist – experienced or amateur – can enjoy cycling in Miami.
